About Aries, the Ram

Traits, qualities & all about Aries, the 1st Sun Sign.

Aries is the sign of the pioneer, the explorer.

Every year, the Sun enters the sign of Aries on or around 21 March, and transits through it till around 20 April. Individuals born during this period are known as "Natives of Aries", or "Sun in Aries", or "Arians", or simply "Aries".

These natives are typically energetic, enthusiastic and courageous. They are aggressive, action-oriented, and tend to act in a physical way to everything. They are initiators, and like to set the ball rolling as soon as they come across an opportunity of interest - but they are not focussed and often lack the discipline or commitment to take things to the finishing line. They are usually impulsive and have a harsh behaviour. Their impulsive and pioneering nature makes it is almost impossible to convince them about anything.

Aries is a cardinal fire sign, that is ruled by Mars.

Symbol: The Ram
Rams roam free, and are known to butt their heads into their enemies, on the slightest pretext. Rams hold ground, even when faced with bigger animals. Aries natives are carefree, confident, and approach life "head on". Aries natives are also combative, and have a rash and hasty nature. The glyph (or symbol) for Aries depicts the ram's pair of horns. A ram's horn, the "horn of plenty" is part of a cornucopia that symbolizes abundance. The "boastful" Aries is a sign or leadership and pioneers. The symbol denotes male fertility, agression, and courage - much like the Aries' raw energy, unbridled passion, and combative nature.

The Generic Aries Backdrop: Personality Traits and Other Notes
An Arian is nothing, if not zealous ... agressively zealous! They have a burning desire to start things off, and make things happen. They would plunge into any opportunity, without even giving it a considerable thought. They are exuberant creatures, and exhibit immense energy and dynamism in all aspects of their lives.

Arians are very active, true to their exuberant nature, and truly enjoy a competition or challenge. They are aggressive and courageous, and consider themselves the first (and best) in everything they do. They are first to start, and driven by their desire to be the first to finish in whatever they set out to do. However, more often than not, they lack the determination and discipline required to complete a project that they have initiated.

That does not mean that they are discouraged or depressed if they cannot stand first - they are not. Aries is a sign of pioneers - they are neither given to long, drawn-out emotional moments, nor are they big on planning ahead. They love to start anything new, and they have trouble sitting still. If they cannot stand first in something, they are probably doing something (else) new already. There is nothing that gets them going more than a fresh slate - the promise of a new day, and a brand new start.

For Arians, their body comes first. They are extremely fit and natural athletes. They usually have an inclination to act bodily, and use their bodies to get things done. They are impulsive and impatient, and get excited or angered at the slightest pretext. They also love their independence, and might react aggressively to any restriction applied on them. They are happiest when they are active, and moving forward.

Their impatience is a definite vice, and they tend to get distracted very easily. The most important thing for an Arian is what is happening "now". They live in the present - disregarding the past, and caring the least about the future. Herein lies the secret to their courage. They completely disregard thoughts of consequences, which makes them appear imulsive or impatient. Not that they are not. Truth is, Arians are optimistic and bold, and even the quieter ones are brave. More often than not, it is an Arian's brave journey into untrodden paths that help them (and others) emerge victorious!

There is an unmistakable childlike quality in all Arians, that makes them explore new things all the time. These guileless 'children at heart' often come out as charming and affectionate individuals. Arians are blessed with impressive leadership qualities. Their aggressive, bold, risk-taking attitude is complimented with their innate charisma - and they effortlessly communicate, convince, and lead others.

Arians generally know what they want, and they know the quickest route to achieving it. They will not hit around the bush, or have hidden agendas. They are open to taking shortcuts if they must, but all their dealings are aboveboard. Underhanded dealings are simply not their style. Herein, lies their straight-forwardness. Arians are direct and uncomplicated, and have a straightforward attitude in everything. They expect the same from others too, and usually get baffled when they do not recieve it from others.

When Arians fall in love, they will not wait or hold back their feelings. They would rather go straight-away and express their feelings. In relationships, they usually pamper their loved ones with excesses - and might feel dejected or disappointed if their feelings are not reciprocated in an equal measure. They are affectionate, understanding and appreciative of their beloved, but only till the time that they recieve (or hope to recieve) the requisite attention and love in return.

Physical Appearance:
The Aries has sharp features, with a prominent chin, nose, and mouth. They have a full upper lip, and wide-set eyes with high eyebrows. They usually have an average height, and the look is usually gaudy or eccentric, quite often sporty, energetic and unrefined. They are quick on their feet, but their movements are far from graceful. With a brash speaking tone, their overall appearance can be jarring. They do not belong to the "discreet" types - and use of red colors are frequent, and sometimes, loud.

This habit of theirs help them progress in a short-term, but compromise relationships with people who matter, in a long run. Putting them in a responsible position can help diminish this selfishness. They also have the habit of spending more than saving, and rarely devote themselves in organizing their finances. They need to understand the importance of saving money for emergencies, as is planning for the future.

Finishing the Aries Backdrop: Decanates, and Cusps
In order the further refine the above personality traits, the sign of Aries (as any other) is divided into 3 Decanates (also known as Decans), based on the "triplicity" of signs. The subtle differentiating alterations for each decan of Aries are explained below:
Aries First Decan: 0° - 10°
Aries/Aries Decanate (Around March 21 - March 30)

Note: Stronger influence of Mars, the ruling planet.
Energetic, enthusiastic, impulsive - amongst other Aries traits.

Aries magnified, these natives have enhanced Aries traits, and are more "Aries" than those in the other two Decanates. They are very energetic and enthusiastic - and love to be on the go. They are usually helpful, and would love to help with other's works to vent their energy and enthusiasm.

They are proactive to achieve whatever they want in life, and work tirelessly towards it. They always want to be the first in every endevour they undertake.

They are also initiators, because of their aggressive, feerless, assertive, and dominant nature. They usually tend to become pioneers in their respective fields.

However, they are also impatient and impulsive. They find it difficult to keep their tongue or temper in control. Their surplus energy usually means quarrels, fights and clashes.
Aries Second Decan: 10° - 20°
Aries/Leo Decanate (Around March 31 - April 9)

Note: Influence of Sun blended with Mars, the ruling planet.
Ambitious, kind-hearted, dynamic, but also smug - along with other Aries traits.

These Arians, influenced by Sun (Leo), are fiercely ambitious. But that does not mean that they want to achieve anything for nothing. They are idealistic, hard-working, and possess constructive and creative abilities. They are high achievers, because of their talents, and because they work relentlessly till they achieve whatever they desire for.

They are kind-hearted, and possess a dynamic personality - always funny, loud, and excitable - which, makes them quite popular in their circles.

They also possess a good sense of humour, and have an uncanny ability to laugh on themselves.

However, they tend to be smugs. They are absolute attention-seekers, and boastful braggers. They are always interested in achieving power, and always desire to be the center of attraction of everything.
Aries Third Decan: 20° - 30°
Aries/Sagittarius Decanate (Around April 10 - April 20)

Note: Influence of Jupiter blended with Mars, the ruling planet.
Generous, optimistic, initiator, but also dreamer - along with other Aries traits.

These Arians, influenced by Jupiter (Sagittarius), are optimistic, intuitive, and generous. They never shirk from helping others in the time of their problems, and perform well in positions of trust and responsibility.

They are adventurous and enjoy the company of others, and like to party and have fun. They are also initiators of avant garde, and love to explore new things.

They revere learning and knowledge, and possess a keen thirst for knowledge. They learn new things with a surprising alacrity.

However, they are dreamers and tend to live in the dreamy world of their own - and, often have unrealistic expectations.

The Sun, being the most dominant of "planets", forms the core character of any individual. All the above traits and notes are based on the Sun (the Sun enter Aries around 21st March and stays till around 20th April - is the basis of this Zodiac sign: Aries) and, including the above "finishing touches" with the Decanates, provide the general "backdrop" of every Aries. There are, however, other planets that alter some of the core traits. For example, Venus rules matters of the heart as does Jupiter to matters of optimism and hope.

The "complete picture" for each individual can only be "portrayed" by considering the positions of the other planets, at the time of birth of the individual. For example, compatibility in relationships according to the Sun is generic, it is the position of Venus and Mars (in addition to the Sun and Moon) that will actually "show" the individual's true preferences and compatibility factors. This is what makes each individual unique, and the Natal Chart important.

However, this does imply complete deviations from Aries traits. Whatever alterations the other planets provide, more or less, act upon the core traits of Aries provided by the "backdrop" of Sun.

Lastly, if the individual is born on the cusp (2 days at the beginning and end) of Aries, they should note the time of birth and make sure when the Sun moved in or out of Aries in that particular year (of birth). The Sun-Sign Table and Transit Dates section provides an easy reference to evaluate the exact zodiac sun sign. Even if the date and time of birth is not available, a brief analysis would solve the issue:
A person born in the cusp beginning Aries has either very enhanced Aries-like traits (falls in the Aries/Aries Decanate), or is a Pisces. Similarly, the person born in the cusp ending Aries is either Aries, or has very enhanced Taurus-like traits (falls in the Taurus/Taurus Decanate) and thus, is a Taurus.

In other words, when considering cusps of Aries, one should remember that no individual can have two different signs, or be a "hybrid" of two signs. There is nothing like a Aries with Pisces-like traits, or Taurus-like traits. The only thing that matters is the position of the Sun. If the Sun has moved into Aries, then the individual is Aries, not Pisces. And, if the Sun has moved into Taurus, then the individual is Taurus, not Aries. The first light, like that of the ring of a solar eclipse, is intense - and creates a completely new individualism, leaving behind all traits of the previous sign.

Some popular people with Sun in Aries:
Alec Baldwin, Mariah Carey (Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Aries), Jackie Chan, Russell Crowe (Sun and Mars in Aries), Shannen Doherty, Robert Downey Jr. (Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Aries), Stacy Ferguson “Fergie”, Sarah Michelle Gellar (Sun and Venus in Aries), Ashley Judd (Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Aries), Lucy Lawless (Sun and Moon in Aries), John Madden (Sun and Mercury in Aries), Conan O’Brien, Sarah Jessica Parker (Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Aries), William Shatner (Sun and Mercury in Aries), Gloria Steinem (Sun and Mars in Aries), Vincent Van Gogh (Sun and Mercury in Aries), Christopher Walken (Sun and Mercury in Aries).
