About Leo, the Lion

Traits, qualities & all about Leo, the 5th Sun Sign.

Leo is the sign of the king, the lover.

Every year, the Sun enters the sign of Leo on or around 23 July, and transits through it till around 22 August. Individuals born during this period are known as "Natives of Leo", or "Sun in Leo", or "Leonites", or simply "Leo".

These natives are ambitious, enthusiastic, romantic and intensely proud of themselves. They are egoistic and always carry a regal composure in everything they do or say. They love the comforts of life, and ensure that they are able to earn enough to meet their regal needs and tastes. They are bossy, decisive, and do not get pushed around by anybody. However, these natives - with their leadership skills and persuasion powers - are expert in getting things done. They are often generous and forgiving to mistakes, but may lose their composure when angered or hurt.

Leo is a fixed fire sign, that is ruled by Sun.

Symbol: The Lion
Lion, the king of beasts, is majestic. Lion is always symbolized as a sovereign and courageous ruler. Leo natives are proud, ambitious and enthusiastic people - who love the conforts of life. Leo natives usually have a regal quality, with a noble mannerism. The glyph (or symbol) for Leo depicts the lion's mane. The looks, size and strength of a lion has always captured human imagination. Much like the lion, Leo natives are bossy, possess leadership skills, and have great convincing power - but they are often generous to a fault. The symbol denotes kingly, commanding, fiery, and daring, yet generous attitude.

The Generic Leo Backdrop: Personality Traits and Other Notes
A Leonite is nothing, if not regal ... dominantly regal! They are fierce, bold and majestic in their lifestyles, ways, and expressions. They are as noble, as they are dignified - even humble. Leonites are independent, but often have a noble inner code that they answer to. They tend to become mighty hurt when others doubt, or don't see them for their noble intentions.

Their confidence, ambition, and positive thinking are exemplary and unparalleled. Leonites precisely know what they want from a given situation, and in general, life. They are driven and determined, and 'self doubt' is not part of their dictionary. Despite their self-confidence, self-aware, and self-conscious nature, they are actually one of the most humble souls around. When something goes wrong, they are the first to blame themselves - and take all responsibility of a goof-up. Leonites would never take the escapist's route, or point fingers at others for mishaps.

Their "never say die" attitude helps them take their failures and setbacks in a positive stride. Leonites are strong-willed, dominant, and undoubtedly the "most authoritative" sign of the Zodiac. Coupled with their kindness, their dominance drive them to change the world in some way, and to make the world a better place to live in. They usually have big dreams and plans, and will go the great lengths, to make others happy. This makes them feel important and happy - as they are driven by affection of others, and their appreciations. Herein lies their reputation of being conceited.

Leonites glow with warmth and generosity. They are enthusiastic and energetic, and bestowed with sparkle and zest. They are usually the center of attraction, joy and life of parties, gatherings, and social or group activities. They are also outspoken and brazen - qualities that sometimes goes against them, much like their dominant streak. They have a reputation for self-absorbed show-offs - but otherwise quite jovial in nature.

They are born leaders, and amazingly creative in almost all spheres of life. They are also rather traditional, with an unmistakable idealistic view of the world and the people in it. They will hold on to situations and people for a very long time before they give up.

They are attracted to all good things in life, and are aware that they have to work hard to achieve them. This makes them hard-working go-getters. Much like the lion, they are usually in their languid moods - and can sleep, laze around, and luxuriate for long periods of time. But when they have a goal in mind, they get to work - with intensity and determination.

They are romantic by nature. In relationships, the loving, amorous, chivalrous Leonites are a joy to behold. The exuberance and vitality of Leonites, is what makes their partners relish all the things they personify - until they cross their path, or go against their wishes. The worst thing that can happen to a Leonite, is when their loved ones accuse them of bad intentions, or display any behaviour that they do not appreciate them.

Physical Appearance:
The Leo has strong features, with a rather aquiline nose, wide forehead and usually thick hair. Their eyes are striking and brilliant, and they have a deep, rich voice. They usually have a tall stature, mainly because of their long legs. Their overall appearance offers an impression of nobility, class, pride and poise - with a graceful gait. However, they may also appear gaudy - with heavy usage of jewellery and accessories, and in shining yellow or orange clothes, their favourite colours.

And, they dislike mediocrity, small-minded people, penny-pinching, and being held back. Professionally, they are happiest as/in actor, manager, jeweller, fashion and arts, and action (e.g. fireman) ...

The best gift for a Leo is an item of status symbol, or a family related collection such as a keepsake album.

Habits
The Leo tends to be an incorrigible braggart. The lavish Leo, endowed with creativity, charm and wit may feel like showing-off once in a while. But, they are in the habit of carrying it too far, and causing resentment among peers. They should learn when and where to draw the line, and balance this habit by praising others for their positive sides. They also have a tendency to overdo with matters of money, and can go overboard with spending. They should learn to budget and prioritize their activities related to finance.

Finishing the Leo Backdrop: Decanates, and Cusps
In order the further refine the above personality traits, the sign of Leo (as any other) is divided into 3 Decanates (also known as Decans), based on the "triplicity" of signs. The subtle differentiating alterations for each decan of Leo are explained below:
Leo First Decan: 0° - 10°
Leo/Leo Decanate (Around July 23 - August 1)

Note: Stronger influence of Sun, the ruling planet.
Attention-seeking, extroverts, independent - amongst other Leo traits.

Leo magnified, these natives have enhanced Leo traits, and are more "Leo" than those in the other two Decanates. They are extroverts and gregarious. They love to hog the limelight, and usually attract all eyes in a social do. With a highly sensitive ego, they tend to be boastful about themselves - and are at their best when in the public eye.

They are independent, and love their freedom - and, do not rely on anyone or anything.

They also tend to be workaholics, at least till a job is perfectly done. They usually do not have any hidden agendas, and do not like to sit idle. They love the buzz of activity around them.

They are usually destined for success and fame. They are creative and are gifted with great reserves and abilities. If not anything, they are sure to achieve social recognition or approval, at least in their circles.
Leo Second Decan: 10° - 20°
Leo/Sagittarius Decanate (Around August 2 - August 12)

Note: Influence of Jupiter blended with Sun, the ruling planet.
Entertaining, inspiring, optimist, but also dramatic - along with other Leo traits.

These Leonites, influenced by Jupiter (Sagittarius), are great entertainers. They love to be in the limelight, and showcase their awesome sense of humour. They are inspiring, and radiate cheer and bonhomie. They love life - and, all good and beautiful things in life.

They are eternal optimists, and born lucky. They tend to be at the right place on the right time, to grab opportunities and rewards with both hands. Their optimism attracts good luck and fortune.

They possess a love for travelling, which broadens their horizons. They also have a lifelong love of learning, and usually explore many different subjects during their lifetime.

However, they tend to take things to excesses, and get dramatic - even in their personal lives.
Leo Third Decan: 20° - 30°
Leo/Aries Decanate (Around August 13 - August 22)

Note: Influence of Mars blended with Sun, the ruling planet.
Ambitious, honest, aggressive, but also stubborn - along with other Leo traits.

These Leonites, influenced by Mars (Aries), are very ambitious. They tend to set high goals for themselves, and achieve their goals through zeal, energy, enthusiasm and dynamism. They hate positions of subordinates, and always prefer being leaders or bosses, in their respective fields.

They are honest, and would never cheat - come what may. They are also straightforward, which makes them seem critical or blunt. They hate drama, and expect others to be as straight-forward as themselves.

They also tend to be aggressive, egoistical and impulsive, in an independent, self-confident, and fearless nature - which makes them full of bluster and bravado.

However, they tend to be possessive, and can get very stubborn - especially when they believe in something and decide to follow a path, or course of action.

The Sun, being the most dominant of "planets", forms the core character of any individual. All the above traits and notes are based on the Sun (the Sun enter Leo around 23rd July and stays till around 22nd August - is the basis of this Zodiac sign: Leo) and, including the above "finishing touches" with the Decanates, provide the general "backdrop" of every Leo. There are, however, other planets that alter some of the core traits. For example, Venus rules matters of the heart as does Jupiter to matters of optimism and hope.

The "complete picture" for each individual can only be "portrayed" by considering the positions of the other planets, at the time of birth of the individual. For example, compatibility in relationships according to the Sun is generic, it is the position of Venus and Mars (in addition to the Sun and Moon) that will actually "show" the individual's true preferences and compatibility factors. This is what makes each individual unique, and the Natal Chart important.

However, this does imply complete deviations from Leo traits. Whatever alterations the other planets provide, more or less, act upon the core traits of Leo provided by the "backdrop" of Sun.

Lastly, if the individual is born on the cusp (2 days at the beginning and end) of Leo, they should note the time of birth and make sure when the Sun moved in or out of Leo in that particular year (of birth). The Sun-Sign Table and Transit Dates section provides an easy reference to evaluate the exact zodiac sun sign. Even if the date and time of birth is not available, a brief analysis would solve the issue:
A person born in the cusp beginning Leo has either very enhanced Leo-like traits (falls in the Leo/Leo Decanate), or is a Cancer. Similarly, the person born in the cusp ending Leo is either Leo, or has very enhanced Virgo-like traits (falls in the Virgo/Virgo Decanate) and thus, is a Virgo.

In other words, when considering cusps of Leo, one should remember that no individual can have two different signs, or be a "hybrid" of two signs. There is nothing like a Leo with Cancer-like traits, or Virgo-like traits. The only thing that matters is the position of the Sun. If the Sun has moved into Leo, then the individual is Leo, not Cancer. And, if the Sun has moved into Virgo, then the individual is Virgo, not Leo. The first light, like that of the ring of a solar eclipse, is intense - and creates a completely new individualism, leaving behind all traits of the previous sign.
