About Virgo, the Virgin

Traits, qualities & all about Virgo, the 6th Sun Sign.

Virgo is the sign of the critic, the secretary.

Every year, the Sun enters the sign of Virgo on or around 23 August, and transits through it till around 22 September. Individuals born during this period are known as "Natives of Virgo", or "Sun in Virgo", or "Virgoans", or simply "Virgo".

These natives are efficient, intelligent, and have a great sense of duty. They will leave no stone unturned to perfectly do the task that they have been assigned to do. However, they tend to be overly picky, critical and finicky - in their inistence on perfection. These natives are energetic, and often achieves a lot in life - but they are unusually helpful and humble. They are methodical in their approach and tend to enforce everybody to follow their strict sets of rules. However, these natives are uncomfortable in limelight, and usually avoid flashy roles, events or places.

Virgo is a mutable earth sign, that is ruled by Mercury.

Symbol: The Virgin
The Virgin is often a symbol of a shy, naive lady "in waiting". Virgins are traditionally expected to maintain composure, and defy any extroverted distraction. Virgo natives rarely celibate, but keep their personal identity intact - even in a relationship. Virgo natives keep away from spotlights and their composure is ever virginal in nature. Sometimes, a woman carrying a sheaf of wisdom is used to symbolize Virgo to represent their harvesting (workaholic) nature. The glyph (or symbol) for Virgo depicts the sexual organs, with a tail that wraps inwards. The M represents their grounded nature, and the inward tail represents their introvert nature. The symbol denotes matters pertaining to beauty, fitness, health and hygiene.

The Generic Virgo Backdrop: Personality Traits and Other Notes
A Virgoan is nothing, if not duty-bound ... meticulously duty-bound! They need to get things right, without overdoing it. Virgoans are exacting and thorough - and for them, any task that is "less than perfect" is incomplete. They are also very sensitive to their surroundings, and absolutely detest scattred or untidy environments.

They are methodical, efficient, and born perfectionists. Virgoans perform well as organizers, and have a list for almost everything, and carefully stick to their lists. They have certain sets of rules in most aspects of life, and expect others to strictly adhere them, too. Virgoans are respectable, hard-working individuals who have a love of knowledge and know-how. They have enormous observation powers, and love do research, in addition to analytic or detail work. If they find something truly interesting, they easily become connoisseurs - and with their attention to details, they learn all of the ins and outs of a subject.

Virgoans are lady-like graceful, gentle, sincere, and caring. It is rare to find their desk scaterred or bed unmade. And, they are always helpful, especially for the ones that they are close to. They are not loud, and are not too comfortable in the limelight. Most Virgoans are happy to to live in the background, as long as they feel useful and appreciated. They also have a strong sense of responsibility, and are natural nurturers. They love all things that are "natural", and possess a certain purity of spirit that keeps them self-sufficient and self-contained, at least on the surface.

They are also excellent communicators, and coupled with their helpfulness, they are good at providing practical solutions and advices - making them the proverbial "agony aunt" of their circles. They are reticent when faced with anything or anyone new, but once they get comfortable with the surroundings, they usually talk up a storm. They are often self-effacing and shy, and tend to get embarrassed easily. They will brush off compliments quickly, and sometimes, even critically - but the truth is, they need to feel useful, respect and appreciation, and can be taken aback if they are not complimented for their efforts.

Their combination of intellect and practicality is sometimes mistaken for coolness. On the contrary, they are restless and somewhat nervous - and have a strong fear of under-performance. Most Virgoans are workaholics, and those that are not, tend to get a vague feeling of discontent if they are not involved in some project. They love to work, and can be some of the sweetest, kindest people around - if they can be kept busy.

However, Virgoans can be as painful, as they are a source of joy. These perfectionists can be critical and slightly irritable in their approach. They also tend to be worriers and naggers to some degree. Although they have evolved over time, and it is rare to find the stereotypical nitpicky, "cleanliness freak" in modern days - their unmistakable "picky" traits remain, and they certainly tend to fuss around, have a whole slew of assorted little complaints, and throw small tantrums. Most Virgoans are rather private and fussy about their work, or their personal workspace - and secretly feel that their methods of doing things are the best - which is often a fact!

Although Virgoans tend to be too hard on themselves, they are the "most fitness conscious" sign of the Zodiac. They are dedicated in their pursuit of fitness, nutrition, health and well-being - as much of others, as they are of themselves. They have a notable "earthly" connection to the body, and are attracted to everything that is natural or pure.

Virgoans are intensely curious, and generally unafraid to explore. They dream of mastery, and long to do everything really well. However, their curiosity is often mistaken for passion. Although knowledgeable, they do not always get their hands dirty - and their willingness to explore is often kept at the intellectual level. They have a strong desire to remain pure, despite their drive to know and explore new things - and thus, often have trouble grasping the big picture. They will practically pick anything apart, without the skills to put things back together.

Nonetheless, Virgoans tend to take things a bit too seriously, and end up worrying about everything - their health, their performance at work, the things that they haven't done yet, the pending emails yet to be checked and replied ... these perfectionists are hardly content with the outcomes, and often dabble into one thing or another - leaving a string of incomplete tasks behind them. They can get nervous if others look at their unfinished works - and often desire to display only the perfectly finished works.

In relationships, they are sincere, loving, caring and very protective of their loved ones. They take pride in their family, and the little things they do. They can be arrogant when it comes to their work, routnes, or hobbies - but overall, they are well respected and appreciated in their circles - especially for their knowledge, kindness, loyality and willingness to lend a hand. When appreciated, Virgoans can and will do everything for their loved ones.

Physical Appearance:
The Virgo has an average height, high forhead, beautiful eyes and sensitive mouth. They usually have a delicate body of average height - with long, elegant but fidgety arms. The split at the end of the nose, gap in the front teeth, and cheek pouches are distinctive features in most of them. Their expression and attitude suggest that they detest showing off, and prefer to remain low-profile. Their overall appearance is serious, discreet, rather studious, and elegant.

Finishing the Virgo Backdrop: Decanates, and Cusps
In order the further refine the above personality traits, the sign of Virgo (as any other) is divided into 3 Decanates (also known as Decans), based on the "triplicity" of signs. The subtle differentiating alterations for each decan of Virgo are explained below:
Virgo First Decan: 0° - 10°
Virgo/Virgo Decanate (Around August 23 - September 3)

Note: Stronger influence of Mercury, the ruling planet.
Generous, trustworthy, unemotional - amongst other Virgo traits.

Virgo magnified, these natives have enhanced Virgo traits, and are more "Virgo" than those in the other two Decanates. They are sociable and friendly - and at times, a bit too talkative. They are also extremely generous - helpful and sympathetic.

However, they can be very unemotional in work or family due to their strict adherence to discipline. They tend to be orderly and meticulous in certain areas of life - especially those that they have chosen themselves. Their discipline, along with their hard-working nature, makes it possible for them to achieve whatever they want for themselves.

They also possess a highly logical mind, and practicality - and, gives attention to every detail of life.

They are extremely trustworthy, and will never spill out other's secrets. In relationships, they are loyal, dependable and faithful on one hand, and caring and considerate on the other.
Virgo Second Decan: 10° - 20°
Virgo/Capricorn Decanate (Around September 4 - September 13)

Note: Influence of Saturn blended with Mercury, the ruling planet.
Disciplined, organized, leadership, but also too analytical - along with other Virgo traits.

These Virgoans, influenced by Saturn (Capricorn), are genuine workaholics. They are blessed with great practicality and stability - and tend to get pretty serious in everything they get involved in. Considered "late bloomers" of the Zodiac, they are naturally programmed to do exceedingly well after 30.

They are disciplined, and can bring order to any chaotic situation - but they may become too strict at times. They also possess great organizational ability and tact. They perform well as managers and organizers. They also tend to be good leaders, and instil motivation with their assertiveness and sense of delegation.

They are perfectionists to the core, and need everything to be perfectly organized. They tend to get too analytical, and get overly critical of others.

They are very dependable, and make one hell of a loyal friend. A secret shared with them, is safer than having it in a safe-vault.
Virgo Third Decan: 20° - 30°
Virgo/Taurus Decanate (Around September 14 - September 22)

Note: Influence of Venus blended with Mercury, the ruling planet.
Artistic, reserved, sensitive, but also critical - along with other Virgo traits.

These Virgoans, influenced by Venus (Taurus), are artistic and perform well in fields of arts that can bring both profit and pleasure. They love comfort and security - with a rather refined sense of likings, and stylish choices.

They are also patient and persistent, and are comfortable with the routine and the known.

They are reserved and sensitive souls, and do not like to share their feelings with others - unless they know them deeply and personally. They are timid and shy in nature. They easily fall in love, and get hurt as easily - in the process.

They are also versatile and conscientious. They tend to take discriminatory stance towards myriad things, and often get quite critical of others in their views.

The Sun, being the most dominant of "planets", forms the core character of any individual. All the above traits and notes are based on the Sun (the Sun enter Virgo around 23rd August and stays till around 22nd September - is the basis of this Zodiac sign: Virgo) and, including the above "finishing touches" with the Decanates, provide the general "backdrop" of every Virgo. There are, however, other planets that alter some of the core traits. For example, Venus rules matters of the heart as does Jupiter to matters of optimism and hope.

The "complete picture" for each individual can only be "portrayed" by considering the positions of the other planets, at the time of birth of the individual. For example, compatibility in relationships according to the Sun is generic, it is the position of Venus and Mars (in addition to the Sun and Moon) that will actually "show" the individual's true preferences and compatibility factors. This is what makes each individual unique, and the Natal Chart important.

However, this does imply complete deviations from Virgo traits. Whatever alterations the other planets provide, more or less, act upon the core traits of Virgo provided by the "backdrop" of Sun.

Lastly, if the individual is born on the cusp (2 days at the beginning and end) of Virgo, they should note the time of birth and make sure when the Sun moved in or out of Virgo in that particular year (of birth). The Sun-Sign Table and Transit Dates section provides an easy reference to evaluate the exact zodiac sun sign. Even if the date and time of birth is not available, a brief analysis would solve the issue:
A person born in the cusp beginning Virgo has either very enhanced Virgo-like traits (falls in the Virgo/Virgo Decanate), or is a Leo. Similarly, the person born in the cusp ending Virgo is either Virgo, or has very enhanced Libra-like traits (falls in the Libra/Libra Decanate) and thus, is a Libra.

In other words, when considering cusps of Virgo, one should remember that no individual can have two different signs, or be a "hybrid" of two signs. There is nothing like a Virgo with Leo-like traits, or Libra-like traits. The only thing that matters is the position of the Sun. If the Sun has moved into Virgo, then the individual is Virgo, not Leo. And, if the Sun has moved into Libra, then the individual is Libra, not Virgo. The first light, like that of the ring of a solar eclipse, is intense - and creates a completely new individualism, leaving behind all traits of the previous sign.
