About Capricorn, the Goat

Traits, qualities & all about Capricorn, the 10th Sun Sign.

Capricorn is the sign of the holy-person, the administrator.

Every year, the Sun enters the sign of Capricorn on or around 22 December, and transits through it till around 20 January. Individuals born during this period are known as "Natives of Capricorn", or "Sun in Capricorn", or "Capricornians", or simply "Capricorn".

These natives are generally patient, tolerant and persevering. They are never impulsive, or in a hurry, and take their time to reach a concrete decision. However, once they reach a decision, they have the determination and strength to take matters to the finishing line. They are usually extremely careful, well-planned and have a high sense of responsibility - which makes them quite dependable. These natives are generally ambitious, set high standards for themselves, and try everything in their capacity to reach their targets.

Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign, that is ruled by Saturn.

Symbol: The Goat
Goats are considerably hardy animals, agile and surefooted. The mountain goat can scale great heights alone, and finds security in mountains and cliffs - the highest places that can be climbed. Capricorn natives are introverted and loners at heart - but highly ambitious. The hard-working Capricorn natives are security-oriented, and achieve success slowly but surely. The glyph (or symbol) for Capricorn depicts the V of the goat's beard, and the tail is that of a fish - because Capricorn was traditionally associated with sea-goats. Much like the goats, Capricorn natives tend to attack when hurt or cornered. The symbol denotes shyness, focus, and capacity to reach goals.

The Generic Capricorn Backdrop: Personality Traits and Other Notes
A Capricornian is nothing, if not hard-working ... sincerely hard-working! They have their feet on the ground, and eye on the prize. They are committed to responsibilities, and work hard to achieve what they want. They know how to do things, and how to get things done - and may even act selfishly to achieve their goals.

The upward-climbing, discipline-loving Capricornians are meticulous and dogged in their persistence for quality and productivity - sometimes, even sticklers of quality. This is one of the reasons that Capricornians are often a notch above their counterparts or collegues. They have a realistic and grounded approach towards life - and have a strong need for recognition, in a worldly sense.

They have a strong sense of society and its framework. Patience, practicality, and security net are certainly their buzzwords. Ambitious and hardworking that they are, Capricornians feel secure if they are doing their part within the society's framework. They do not mind taking things slowly, as long as they are moving forward, and have their aim at the top of the mountain of life. Capricornians are steady and sure-footed, and promptly turn their backs on anything they deem frivolous. They are concerned with things that are worthwhile - including their own lives. They want to do something worthwhile, and need to feel useful and effective in real life to make themselves satisfied with their lives. Their sense of purpose is admirable.

Most Capricornians are attracted to status symbols - wearing the best clothes, using impressive stuffs, driving flamboyant cars. However, they are not known to take too many risks. They tread beaten tracks, use "tried and tested" things, and value the foundation laid by others - who have been around before them.

Capricornians are actually rather soft-hearted, and usually rather lonely - although they will rarely let it show. Capricornians are not known to wear their emotions on their sleeves. They value all things that are practical, and often appear as reserved - even standoffish, boring or staid. Truth is, they are blessed with a deep wisdom, understanding and stability of thought and action from an early age. In fact, born with the wisdom of mature adults, young Capricornians are a misfit - working at nights, unwilling to go out, guarded, closed - even lazy, tedious and usually thinner/shorter/weaker than their peers. Fact is, Capricornians are slow to blossom, and it usually takes the other side of 30 to see their sparkly, lively side. Around this time, they change their streaks altogether - mostly due to the fact that their peers achieve maturity and start appreciating their wisdom, which the prodigious and confident Capricornians crave for.

Capricornians come across as unimaginative, but they are generally very capable individuals with a strong sense of tradition and responsibility. They are, however, enormously creative when it comes to the material world.

As friends, Capricornians are rather loyal, and generally good with their "words" - making the extra effort to help their friends organize and manage their lives - not to forget, their practical advices from time to time. Capricorn is the "most resourceful" sign of the Zodiac. They have mastered the art of getting things done, and keeping everybody in good humor. Nonetheless, they are excellent at keeping a straight face, and their sense of humor can be of the deadpan variety - even bitingly sarcastic!

Love for Capricornians is special - and marriage is on their minds from an early age. Their choices, however, has a lot to do with stability and social recognition. In relationships, they are loyal, committed, and caring towards their loved ones. They are great providers, and usually work hard to bind relationships together. Nonethless, they are known to pass up love for duty and virtue, and often have their partners complaining to get a share of their time.

Finishing the Capricorn Backdrop: Decanates, and Cusps
In order the further refine the above personality traits, the sign of Capricorn (as any other) is divided into 3 Decanates (also known as Decans), based on the "triplicity" of signs. The subtle differentiating alterations for each decan of Capricorn are explained below:
Capricorn First Decan: 0° - 10°
Capricorn/Capricorn Decanate (Around December 22 - December 31)

Note: Stronger influence of Saturn, the ruling planet.
Determined, hard-working, moody - amongst other Capricorn traits.

Capricorn magnified, these natives have enhanced Capricorn traits, and are more "Capricorn" than those in the other two Decanates. They are very hard-working. They are determined and work with dedication. They are patient and firm, and they see through any project they undertake - due to their energy, enthusiasm and dedication.

They are also idealistic - both in home and work. They are faithful and affectionate to people they care for. They work hard to provide their near and dear ones with all the comforts of life.

They are born with leadership skills, and usually have a good intelligence and communication abilities.

However, their mood swings are unpredictable, and have a philosophical nature - that sometimes make them completely unaffected by pain or pleasure. They can be quite temperamental, and sometimes even go into depression - especially when things are not going their way.
Capricorn Second Decan: 10° - 20°
Capricorn/Taurus Decanate (Around January 1 - January 10)

Note: Influence of Venus blended with Saturn, the ruling planet.
Adjustable, charming, reliable, but also pessimistic - along with other Capricorn traits.

These Capricornians, influenced by Venus (Taurus), are adjustable and charming. They can literally charm anyone to have their work/favor done.

They enjoy both pleasure and profit - and usually have most things going for them. They are very reliable - both in work and relationships, and perform well in fields of mass production, communications and top management. They make good businessmen, too.

Sometimes, they encounter emotional or marriage problems - primarily because they tend to be too preoccupied with themselves.

They can also be too pessimistic, and refuse to see the brighter side of life.
Capricorn Third Decan: 20° - 30°
Capricorn/Virgo Decanate (Around January 11 - January 20)

Note: Influence of Mercury blended with Saturn, the ruling planet.
Disciplined, practical, loyal, but also cynical - along with other Capricorn traits.

These Capricornians, influenced by Mercury (Virgo), are practical in nature and down-to-earth about everything. They are also very disciplined, and sometimes tend to be too strict in their dealings.

They are faithful in the relationships with loved ones, and friends - and make one hell of a loyal friend.

They are also intelligent, and combined with their ambitious and enthusiastic traits, tend to rise to the top positions in the area of work that they choose. They also use their contacts and influences fully. They perform well in communications and media-related fields - including sales, franchises, commission businesses.

However, they tend to spend much of their time thinking out the past, and hold grudges for a very long time. And, they may get cynical at times.

The Sun, being the most dominant of "planets", forms the core character of any individual. All the above traits and notes are based on the Sun (the Sun enter Capricorn around 22nd December and stays till around 20th January - is the basis of this Zodiac sign: Capricorn) and, including the above "finishing touches" with the Decanates, provide the general "backdrop" of every Capricorn. There are, however, other planets that alter some of the core traits. For example, Venus rules matters of the heart as does Jupiter to matters of optimism and hope.

The "complete picture" for each individual can only be "portrayed" by considering the positions of the other planets, at the time of birth of the individual. For example, compatibility in relationships according to the Sun is generic, it is the position of Venus and Mars (in addition to the Sun and Moon) that will actually "show" the individual's true preferences and compatibility factors. This is what makes each individual unique, and the Natal Chart important.

However, this does imply complete deviations from Capricorn traits. Whatever alterations the other planets provide, more or less, act upon the core traits of Capricorn provided by the "backdrop" of Sun.

Lastly, if the individual is born on the cusp (2 days at the beginning and end) of Capricorn, they should note the time of birth and make sure when the Sun moved in or out of Capricorn in that particular year (of birth). The Sun-Sign Table and Transit Dates section provides an easy reference to evaluate the exact zodiac sun sign. Even if the date and time of birth is not available, a brief analysis would solve the issue:
A person born in the cusp beginning Capricorn has either very enhanced Capricorn-like traits (falls in the Capricorn/Capricorn Decanate), or is a Sagittarius. Similarly, the person born in the cusp ending Capricorn is either Capricorn, or has very enhanced Aquarius-like traits (falls in the Aquarius/Aquarius Decanate) and thus, is an Aquarius.

In other words, when considering cusps of Capricorn, one should remember that no individual can have two different signs, or be a "hybrid" of two signs. There is nothing like a Capricorn with Sagittarius-like traits, or Aquarius-like traits. The only thing that matters is the position of the Sun. If the Sun has moved into Capricorn, then the individual is Capricorn, not Sagittarius. And, if the Sun has moved into Aquarius, then the individual is Aquarius, not Capricorn. The first light, like that of the ring of a solar eclipse, is intense - and creates a completely new individualism, leaving behind all traits of the previous sign.

Some popular people with Sun in Capricorn:
Dido Armstrong (Sun in Capricorn), David Bowie (Sun, Mercury, and Mars in Capricorn), Nicolas Cage (Sun, Mercury, and Mars in Capricorn), Jim Carrey (Sun, Venus, and Mars in Capricorn), Kevin Costner, Marlene Dietrich (Sun, Mercury, and Mars in Capricorn), Mel Gibson (Sun and Mercury in Capricorn), James Earl Jones (Sun, Moon, and Mercury in Capricorn), Annie Lennox (Sun, Moon, and Mercury in Capricorn), Moliere (Sun and Mercury in Capricorn), Michelle Obama (Sun and Mercury in Capricorn), Jimmy Page (Sun and Mercury in Capricorn), Howard Stern (Sun, Mercury, and Venus in Capricorn), Tiger Woods (Sun and Mercury in Capricorn).
