About Sagittarius, the Archer

Traits, qualities & all about Sagittarius, the 9th Sun Sign.

Sagittarius is the sign of the lawyer, the sage.

Every year, the Sun enters the sign of Sagittarius on or around 23 November, and transits through it till around 21 December. Individuals born during this period are known as "Natives of Sagittarius", or "Sun in Sagittarius", or "Sagittarians", or simply "Sagittarius".

These natives are absolutely carefree, fun-loving and adventurous. They have a craving for travelling - especially because they are keen on experiencing and understanding various people and cultures. They are casual in nature, and do not avoid experimenting with anything new. Irrespective of their past or present experiences, they are optimistic and believe in moving on. These natives are often restless and have little to do with commitment, stability or loyality - and can hardly keep a promise.

Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign, that is ruled by Jupiter.

Symbol: An Archer
In Greek mythology, Centaurs (half man, half horse) are considered brave, wise and adventurous - but they were also given to brawling and uncivilized behavior, due to their animalistic nature. Sagittarius natives are prone to be fun-loving, casual, and have a great craving for travel. Sagittarius natives also have a spiritual and philosophical nature. The Centaur-Archer is used to symbolize the Sagittarius attempt to free itself from man's animal instincts and desires - towards spiritual aspirations. The glyph (or symbol) for Sagittarius depicts the archer's arrow slung in a bow to symbolize abundance, and a direction to higher purpose. The symbol denotes an open mind, positive outlook, and generous disposition.

Finishing the Sagittarius Backdrop: Decanates, and Cusps
In order the further refine the above personality traits, the sign of Sagittarius (as any other) is divided into 3 Decanates (also known as Decans), based on the "triplicity" of signs. The subtle differentiating alterations for each decan of Sagittarius are explained below:
Sagittarius First Decan: 0° - 10°
Sagittarius/Sagittarius Decanate (Around November 23 - December 2)

Note: Stronger influence of Jupiter, the ruling planet.
Blunt, direct, optimistic - amongst other Sagittarius traits.

Sagittarius magnified, these natives have enhanced Sagittarius traits, and are more "Sagittarius" than those in the other two Decanates. They are honest, frank and tend to be too blunt and "on the face" in communications.

They have a good sense of humor. They are born optimistic, and have a large heart - and, they spread joy and laughter wherever they go. Their optimism is infectious.

They are also adventurous in nature and direct in attitude. They usually have no hidden agenda.

Their honesty is largely appreciated by people who know them well. Otherwise, their frank, direct and blunt views usually land them in trouble - especially with emotional people.
Sagittarius Second Decan: 10° - 20°
Sagittarius/Aries Decanate (Around December 3 - December 12)

Note: Influence of Mars blended with Jupiter, the ruling planet.
Assertive, open-minded, responsible, but also tactless - along with other Sagittarius traits.

These Sagittarians, influenced by Mars (Aries), are assertive - and find it easy to impress others. They are also open-minded, and are very clear about what they want in life - and act decisively towards achieving them.

They are enthusiastic, and love to take on more responsibilities - especially eager for challenging assignments.

However, they also restless, impulsive and always in a hurry. They yearn for variety, challenges and spontaneity - and tend to get easily bored. They usually aquire workable proficiencies in many trades and systems, but are unable to master any of them.

They may get very tactless, and too open and harsh in their dealings - even on sensitive issues.
Sagittarius Third Decan: 20° - 30°
Sagittarius/Leo Decanate (Around December 13 - December 21)

Note: Influence of Sun blended with Jupiter, the ruling planet.
Charismatic, leadership, instinctive, but also critical - along with other Sagittarius traits.

These Sagittarians, influenced by Sun (Leo), are instinctive - and always careful and cautious in their dealings. They perform well as negotiators, and settling issues. They are born with leadership qualities, and exploit their boldness and agressiveness towards successfully achieving their goals.

They also have a broad outlook - which makes it difficult for them to gauge the emotions and reactions of others - individually.

They are warm, friendly, charismatic - and easily endear and impress others towards them. They love to be the limelight, and like publicity about themselves. They perform well as actors, entertainers and even lawyers.

They are also truthful, and can get very critical of other's faults and weaknesses.

The Sun, being the most dominant of "planets", forms the core character of any individual. All the above traits and notes are based on the Sun (the Sun enter Sagittarius around 23rd November and stays till around 21st December - is the basis of this Zodiac sign: Sagittarius) and, including the above "finishing touches" with the Decanates, provide the general "backdrop" of every Sagittarius. There are, however, other planets that alter some of the core traits. For example, Venus rules matters of the heart as does Jupiter to matters of optimism and hope.

The "complete picture" for each individual can only be "portrayed" by considering the positions of the other planets, at the time of birth of the individual. For example, compatibility in relationships according to the Sun is generic, it is the position of Venus and Mars (in addition to the Sun and Moon) that will actually "show" the individual's true preferences and compatibility factors. This is what makes each individual unique, and the Natal Chart important.

However, this does imply complete deviations from Sagittarius traits. Whatever alterations the other planets provide, more or less, act upon the core traits of Sagittarius provided by the "backdrop" of Sun.

Lastly, if the individual is born on the cusp (2 days at the beginning and end) of Sagittarius, they should note the time of birth and make sure when the Sun moved in or out of Sagittarius in that particular year (of birth). The Sun-Sign Table and Transit Dates section provides an easy reference to evaluate the exact zodiac sun sign. Even if the date and time of birth is not available, a brief analysis would solve the issue:
A person born in the cusp beginning Sagittarius has either very enhanced Sagittarius-like traits (falls in the Sagittarius/Sagittarius Decanate), or is a Scorpio. Similarly, the person born in the cusp ending Sagittarius is either Sagittarius, or has very enhanced Capricorn-like traits (falls in the Capricorn/Capricorn Decanate) and thus, is a Capricorn.

In other words, when considering cusps of Sagittarius, one should remember that no individual can have two different signs, or be a "hybrid" of two signs. There is nothing like a Sagittarius with Scorpio-like traits, or Capricorn-like traits. The only thing that matters is the position of the Sun. If the Sun has moved into Sagittarius, then the individual is Sagittarius, not Scorpio. And, if the Sun has moved into Capricorn, then the individual is Capricorn, not Sagittarius. The first light, like that of the ring of a solar eclipse, is intense - and creates a completely new individualism, leaving behind all traits of the previous sign.
